Web Hosting - Hosting Terms Glossary A-D

Web Hosting Terms Glossary : A-D / E-J /K-Z

Applet (Java) -- a simple program written in the Java programming language and integrated into a web page for added interactivity. Common examples include scrolling text boxes.

Autoresponders -- a specific e-mail address which is configured to automatically send a pre-written reply to anyone who sends mail to that address. For example, advertising@yourdomain.com might be setup as an autoresponder to automatically send a copy of your advertising rates to anyone who sent an e-mail to that address.

Bandwidth -- refers to a measure of the amount of data that can be transmitted through a connection (such as a fiber optic cable) at one time. Measured in bits per second (bps). Examples include T1, T3, DS3, OC-12, OC-48, etc. For bandwidth usage see data transfer.

C, C++ -- two different, but fundamentally similar, computer programming languages commonly used to write programs or scripts for use on web servers.

CGI (Common Gateway Interface) -- a specification for the transfer of data between a web server and a CGI program. CGI programs are commonly written in languages such as Perl, C, C++, Java, etc. Common examples of CGI programs include search engines, guestbooks, etc.

Co-location web hosting -- a hosting service where the customer pays the web hosting provider to connect the company's server to the internet via a high speed connection at the host's facility. The customer will generally maintain administrative (root) access to the server with this service.

Dedicated web hosting -- a hosting service where the customer rents an entire server from the web hosting company for their exclusive use. Differs from co-location because the web hosting company provides the server hardware instead of the customer. Also, the hosting company will generally maintain administrative (root) access over the server.

Disk space -- refers to an amount of space on a server's hard drive. May be thought of in terms of a server's total disk space or a specific disk space allocation for a web hosting account. For example if a hosting customer was given a disk space allocation of 10 MB on a web server, the customer would be able to store 10 MB of data, such as images, html pages, or other files, within their account on the server.

DNS (Domain Name System) server -- a server employed by a registrar, isp, or other web entity which maintains a database of domain name information for internet navigation.

Domain name -- a text representation or your url which is used to locate web hosting accounts on the internet. Essentially a domain name is a company's address on the web. Examples of top level domain names include yahoo.com, icann.org, and yoursite.net. Many new top level domain names are becoming available such as those ending in .biz, .coop, .info, and .name.

Domain parking -- service of holding a domain name on a web hosting companies nameserver. In the past this service was required any time a domain name was registered. Recently, however, most registrars provide this service free of charge when a domain name is registered.

Domain registration -- the process of registering for ownership of a given domain name through a certified registrar. Registering a domain name allows the purchaser exclusive use of that domain name for a given contract period, usually 1-2 years.

Domain transfer -- the process of "moving" a domain name from one provider's DNS to that of another. This is achieved by changing the DNS server information listed with the domain registrar to reflect the address your new host's nameservers.
